5AC Mannequin Challenge

Earlier this month, 5AC asked their teacher if they could 'do a Mannequin Challenge' in class. Their teacher told them they could, but that they'd have to plan the performance as a class. So, the children set to with planning what they'd do and the route the camera would take. The final performance can be found below:

Year Five Pokedex

At the end of the autumn term, Year Five based their report writing around the children's interest in Pokemon. After learning about report writing, we wrote non-chronological reports about our own Pokemon inventions.

Visit the Year Five Pokedex 2016 to read about the creatures we came up with.

We created a land for them to live in...

We created QR Codes that link to our work, so we could play a Pokemon Go style game:

If you'd like to play, the cards can be downloaded from here.

In addition, some of the children's work is available on iTunes and as a PDF.

Cadbury's – Unwrap Joy

The 2013 Cadbury's Christmas advert featured a road where families woke up to find out that their street had been covered in wrapping paper. We've used this as a creative writing prompt.

Our Quento Puzzles

We've used Quento in our maths lessons. Both Sami and Morgan enjoyed using Quento and decided to have a go at making their own puzzles.

 An example of how to solve the puzzle above: 'Make 5 with 2 numbers', 1 + 4 and 'Make 6 with 3 numbers', 4 - 1 + 3.

If you have a go at any of the children's puzzles, let us know by leaving a comment how you get on.

Should Children Have An Afternoon Break?

We've been writing discussion texts. A discussion text must put forward a balanced argument without bias. How do you think we did?

Sentences for a Discussion Text

We're currently studying discussion texts. Our current discussion is about whether cars should be allowed in the town centre. Below are some examples of sentences that could be used to discuss this topic.

Harriet:

Jamie:

Sami:

Of course, while writing a discussion text it is important to remain impartial and write without bias.

Playground Maths

At the end of the school day, some of you may have noticed the chalk marks on the playground. Today, 5LM/LG took their maths outside and practised rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 on the playground surface with chalk.

Place Value

In maths, we've started the year by looking at improving our ability to use place value and, in particular, read and order numbers up to 1 million. Here's an example of some work from 5BH:
Did these children manage to order all of the numbers correctly?

Twelfth Night Newspaper Articles

After studying Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, we imagined ourselves being newspaper reporters on the island of Illyria covering the events from the play. These recounts were written by Morgan & Freddie:

100 WC Showcase Week 24

Charlotte wrote a 100 Word Challenge entry that needed to be based upon a photograph of a prison cell. Again, like many times this year, her work was 'Showcased' on the 100 Word challenge website.

Below is a copy of her writing that was originally posted here (Have a read of the comment(s) left for Charlotte too).

I opened my eyes to see an unfamiliar room with rusty bronze bars at the entrance. I was in prison. I closed my eyes, rubbed them hard then opened them. But I was still there. I kept silent as I could see other prisoners asleep and security guards outside some of the other cells. The bars wouldn’t budge as I shook them hard and kicked against them with all my might. I was trapped here forever. I looked around the room again for an escape route. But it was no use, I was trapped here forever.
