Mid-September Update

It's been a really busy couple of weeks!  We've been settling in and getting used to the new routines, and we've already been challenging ourselves with some fun activities.  Some of what we've been up to is included below.

English

Our first focus in English is Twelfth Night, which is a play by William Shakespeare.  We really liked finding out all about him as part of our summer home learning, so it has been good to read one of the plays.  It's a really funny story with lots of mix-ups and confusion.  It was especially fun acting out some of the scenes and learning about life in Shakespeare's time.

Maths

Maths this week has been great!  The best activity was trying to solve the Mad Hatter's Tea Party logic problem.  We had to work out the seating plan just from some tricky clues like, "The grinning one has to be kept in check and needs to sit next to the White Rabbit."  It was really hard and it took us a while, but we got there.

Art

We've created all kinds of beautiful art over the past couple of weeks.  The ruler art looked so tricky at first, but once we got the hang of it, it was really easy.  Everyone's looks different, but they all look fantastic.  We also started researching and drawing some bird art.  We're really proud of our sketches so far, and we can't wait to start painting with watercolours.

R.E.

As part of our 'sparky start' for R.E. this year, we got to try all kinds of foods linked to religious celebrations.  We're going to learn all about how different religions mark important events this year, and we found out that food is quite an important part of those celebrations in every religion.  Some people didn't like the dates very much, but most of it was really tasty.

Christmas is coming!

This has been a very exciting week in Year Five.  In maths, we used Number Link boards to help us apply our knowledge of the 1-12 times tables to harder times tables (like the 0.04 times table, or the 7000 time table).

On Wednesday, we had a great time hunting for our Pokémon non-chronological reports in the playground.  All our work can be read on our class blogs:

Some people even managed to get to be a Level Five Pokémon trainer because they found every single one.

The Boat Race tutorial

We have been working hard to finish our Scratch games, taking some time to try out the Boat Race Tutorial on the Code Club website to help us with our coding.  We also explored what life would be like as a mountain climber by creating our own short play or mime about a famous expedition.

On Friday, it was Christmas Decoration Day!  It was really good fun talking and writing about Christmas adverts, solving maths puzzles about Santa's stocking and making a range of decorations for the classroom.  The best bit was getting to wear our Christmas jumpers and listen to Christmas songs while we worked.

West End in Schools

Our Visit from the West End

On Thursday 3rd October 2019, a visitor from the West End came and taught us about acting. We had fun performing scenes from the Shakespeare play Twelfth Night. 

Dianna from West End in Schools came to visit us and we practised scenes from the play to perform for the other Year Five classes and the teachers. 

It was fun but nerve wracking when we performed it to the rest of Year Five. 5MH performed freeze frames, 5AC performed Malvolio being bullied by Feste, 5SF performed Malvolio prancing in yellow tights with cross gartered laces and 5EV performed the big duel between Sir Andrew and Cesario (Viola).

We had tons of fun learning about acting and performing for our friends!

Delving Into Characters

As part of our English work on video short The Piano, pupils composed questions they would ask the main character and hot-seated to find possible answers.  Their questions have made some beautiful fingerprints.
