500 Word Story
During Be an Author Week our sponsored event was to write a 500 word story. The story Kitty wrote can be found below. Have a read and, if you have time, leave her a comment to let her know what you thought.
I’m Fiona, the baker. I live in a
flat in London. My bakery is underground. Every day I wake up at 7.00am and go
to my bakery to get ready for the day. I put my flour covered apron on and
start making the bread. I will start from the beginning of my story.
I woke up as normal and went down
to my bakery and went to put my apron on but it had no flour on it! Then at
8.35am Miss Rosemary should have come in but instead a man comes in and offers
me a banana. And me being me, I can never say no to a banana so I took it from
him and tore off the golden yellow skin to reveal a squishy, squelchy, soft
banana (yum!) This man who had given me the banana had a smirk on his face. I
was suspicious. I cautiously took a bite of the fruit and all of a sudden I,
me, I was floating in the air just like that. I didn’t know what had happened.
I’m sitting in a cold, dark,
drafty tower, not knowing what had happened. The man was evil, I know it. But
when he was standing there in front of me, my brain felt like it had vanished.
He tells me his name is Mr. Smith. He told me he had brought me to the tower
because I had stolen something. Apparently I used it every day at 7.04am, I had
to think for ages. Considering I didn’t have a brain at that precise moment I
think I did pretty well (44 minutes!). Then I suddenly knew what it was, but I
don’t understand how I had stolen it. I got given it for my 21st
birthday. It came with an even bigger present. My bakery. He thought I had
actually stolen a….a….a golden key! On my birthday that year I woke up at
7.30am and found a golden key. I went downstairs for breakfast asking what the
key was for. My parents had no idea what it was for. Instead they gave me a
grey key. They told me it was for my bakery they had bought me. I went with them
to the bakery and used my grey key to unlock the building. It didn’t fit. I
tried the golden key and it worked this time and the door swung open. My
parents were confused.
Now with this ‘Mr. Smith’ man, I
still don’t understand how I stole the key.
He tries telling me my life
story, but I can’t hear him. When he had finished he told me about the key and
what had happened to it. Now I could suddenly hear what he was saying. He
started by saying, “the key is important, it is mine. When I was fifteen I got
given the key. It was for this building you are in right now”, he paused….then
looked around. The room had no windows and the odd thing was there was no door
either. He started babbling on again, “the key was for this room, but when I
got to the building I saw it had no door, so I threw the key as hard as I
could. It has been around the world 100 times and one day it landed. On your
bedside desk. Then you took it and used it until this very day. So I’ve locked
you up in this building until you give it back!” I was confused, I don’t get
how it is stolen. Then, all of a sudden he gets a gun and shoots me. But it
doesn’t kill me, it puts me to sleep. Then he steals my golden key! He wakes me
up and then vanishes just like that…vanishes!
I bang and smash the wall but it
won’t budge, I’m in here stuck forever and I’ll rot away like an old apple
core. Suddenly I remember, I used to do karate. I took a big run up
and…slam…I’m through the wall! Right in front of me though is my bakery? All
this time I was next to my bakery. I run as fast as I can to the bakery as if I
was being chased by a lion. I slam through the door and lock it, very quickly!
I go to bed and fall asleep. I
remember my dream. I had defeated Mr. Smith by chasing him on a big, black
stallion horse called Diablo. Diablo reared back on his hindquarters and his
hooves slammed down on Mr. Smith’s back. He falls to the ground and the key
goes with him, I grab the key and ride off into the distance.
I wake up at 7.00am as usual and
weirdly enough my key is there. I go down to the bakery and put on my flour
covered apron. At 8.35am Miss Rosemary came in for her bread. She leaves and I
can see a man in the distance, he looks familiar!
Has this all been a dream? I’ll
never know.
